When it comes to traveling, there’s a set of unspoken rules that tourists should always consider, especially if they’re traveling in a major city. Although breaking some of these rules is often unavoidable, it’s worth doing your homework beforehand. From making sure never to stand on the wrong side of the escalator to feeding random pigeons, here’s a list of things you should never do as a tourist in a major city.
Stopping in the middle of sidewalks is undeniably one of the most common habits of tourists in major cities. Sure, we understand that it’s essential to take that photo or check the GPS real quick, but why not pull over to the side for a second? While tourists may be having a magical time exploring the city, most people are probably rushing back and forth from work, meetings, and life in general. So instead of suddenly stopping in the middle of the sidewalk, do everyone a favor and move over.
Although it might sound appealing to order a cab, an Uber, or rideshare to get from one place to another in a major city, rush hour is the worst possible time. The truth is that taking public transport would also be a better option than a cab, although during rush hour the tube and bus stations can also get pretty congested. It might be much easier to walk to your destination or make your plans so you can avoid rush hour.
If there is one thing that is hard to understand, is why on earth, people stand on the wrong side of the escalator? Although different countries have different “standing” sides, there is a universal escalator rule: walk on one side, and stand on the other. Respecting this golden rule will allow people who are in a rush to walk faster in the escalator, while you can chill during your way up or down without receiving tons of disapproving stares.
It’s understandable that someone would want to look their best while traveling, especially when it comes to cities that are a bit more “posh” when it comes to fashion. Since being a tourist often includes a lot of walking around the city, it’s probably a smart idea to pass on those shiny and polished shoes for something that won’t kill your feet.
It can be hard to get your way around public transportation in a major city. Some people might rudely push others around to get in and out, but no matter how challenging it might be, just avoid doing it yourself. Be polite and respect the local rules, which usually consist of waiting for everyone to get off before one can get in and vice-versa.
Feeding pigeons has become such a popular attraction in major cities, that some cities have found no other choice but to impose fines on people. No matter how cute they look, and how fun it can be to have tons of pigeons flying around you, feeding pigeons human food is not only bad for the birds themselves, but also for the city. By feeding them, you’ll be decreasing their ability to scavenge on their own, while also attracting pigeons that might have diseases that could eventually infect humans.
